Bishop O’Dowd High School students, faculty and staff gathered in the large gymnasium on Nov. 21 to reflect on their blessings at the Thanksgiving Liturgy.
The theme of the liturgy was “Rise Up and Give Thanks,” and hundreds of messages of gratitude, written by students in their religion classes last week, were displayed on a banner in front of the altar and on the stage. Several of the messages were read aloud by members of ASB, Filipino Club, Jewish Club, Black Student Union, Unity Club, Feminist Club, Philanthropy Club and CMT.
Religious Studies teacher and Retreat Coordinator Michael Downs offered a reflection about Mother Teresa of Calcutta and how he was inspired by her to volunteer as a teacher in a school located in a slum outside of Calcutta. He also led the group in Mother Teresa’s “The Simple Path” meditation.
Students offered prayers from a variety of faith traditions – Jewish, Hindu, Muslim Buddhist and Navajo, as well as an Earth Abundance Prayer – and reflections on the gospel reading.
The annual Goods and Toy Drive was kicked off at the Liturgy with a moving video of the children that will benefit from our generosity.
