Women’s Track Wins North Coast Section Title, Athletes advance to State Meet

FRIDAY The day began with the Girls 4x100m placing 1st overall and easily moving on to the finals. The Boys 4x100m relay team competed well and placed 15th overall, 5th in their heat. Damani Ballard ran the 1st leg followed by Victor Flint, Matt Challenger, and Andy Pike.


In the boys 1600m sophomore Spencer Berkins placed 14th overall, missing qualifying for the finals by less than a second. This time was a personal best by 3 seconds. Spencer started the season opening with a 5:05 1600m and took off 40 seconds over the course of the season. Jourdan Amen competed in the women’s 1600m race running 5:20, her second fastest 1600m time this season. She later went on to compete in the 800m where she tied her PR running 2:24 and the came back and ran on the 4x400m relay team.


KaRa Awakoaiye placed 1st in her heat of the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.44 which advanced her to the finals. Tierra Robinson-Jones also placed 1st in her heat of the 400m with a time of 55.66. She later came back and placed 1st in her heat of the 200m with a time of 24.48 advancing to the finals.


In the exhibition women’s 4x800m relay the Dragons competed with a young squad: junior Kaelyn Shirley, sophomore Maeve Kelly, freshman Brooke Johnson, and freshman Jeneeva Tooliajan. The girls competed well in a big field placing 8th overall. Shirley split 2:28, Kelly 2:32, Johnson 2:45, Tooliajan 2:45.


In the girls 4x400m relay the lady Dragons easily placed 1st to move on to the finals on Friday. The boys 4x400m (Isaiah Pitre, Owen Taffe, Matt Challenger, Andy Pike) placed 14th with a time of 3:32.


Natalie Mitchell and Maya Jenkins competed in the girls discus. Maya placed 8th overall in the finals with a throw of 114 feet 3 inches. Maya is just a sophomore with several great years of throwing ahead of her.


Senior Richard Atthowe won his flight of the boys shot put with a throw of 44 feet 10 inches.


SATURDAY Senior Natalie Mitchell started the day off strong by placing 3rd and qualifying for the State meet in the Girls Shot put. Her through of 37 feet 10 inches was her 2nd best throw of the 2016 season. Kameela Hall also competed in the shot put placing 16th with a throw of 33 feet 6.5 inches.


Junior Hana Johnson placed 3rd in the Girls Triple Jump and will move on to compete next weekend at the State meet. Her jump of 38 feet is the furthest jump she has had this season. Hana had a late start to the season and her performance at such a high level in such a short amount of time is tremendous.


Richard Atthowe competed in the boys discus and threw 131 feet 3 inches to place 3rd in his flight.


The girls 4x100m relay placed first with a time of 47.23. This is the second fastest time of the season for the 4x100m team and the fastest with this group of ladies (KaRa Awakoaiye, Tierra Robinson-Jones, Lauryn Moore, Jordan Jones). This times ranks the relay team #12 in California.


KaRa Awakoaiye placed 2nd in the 100m hurdles, the race was won by Kayla Robinson from El Cerrito High School. KaRa’s time of 13.84 ranks her #4 in California.


In the Girls 400m Tierra Robinson-Jones improved on her PR set last week at the Bayshore Finals and dipped even further under 55 seconds with her time of 54.37 She won the race and is now ranked #5 in California.


In the Girls 200m Tierra came back and placed 1st again running 24.18. She was followed in 2nd and 3rd by Kayla Robinson from El Cerrito and Kirsten Carter.


In the girls 3200m race Emma Wawzyrnek ran 11:31 which was a PR by 22 seconds. This was her first time qualifying for NCS and caps an end of a great season for her in all events.

In the boys 3200m senior Nick Downs completed his last race as a Dragon. Nick had a great season running personal best times in every event from the 400m to the 3200m.

To end the day the girls 4x400m relay went out with a bang as they placed 2nd running 3:48.13 and moving on to the state meet. This time ranks them #8 in California. Aliyah Walker, Tierra Robinson-Jones, Lauryn Moore and Jazmine Powell made up the relay team.


The following athletes will be competing this upcoming weekend in the California State meet at Buchanan High School:
