Women’s Tennis Match Recap 10/11

10/11/2016

Berkeley 4, O’Dowd 3

RECORD – 6-4 WACC, 14-8 OVERALL

SUMMARY – Another tough 3-4 Foothill Div loss – just slightly outpaced in every singles match.  Milan played magnificently in a losing cause to big hitting Yellowjacket #1 Sasha Turchak.  The other Berkeley singles players had the touch as O’Dowd suffered a rare singles sweep.  On the contrary, the Lady Dragons pulled the rope in doubles, taking all three matches in solid fashion.   Unfortunately for O’Dowd – there are FOUR singles and only THREE doubles.  As we constantly improve – adding in a few singles victories will result in the team winning as well.  A great effort overall.

MATCH MVP – Madison Lenoir-Irwin & Kate Cherryhomes (Soph) at #1 Doubles staged a come-from-behind 7-6 (4) 6-3 win over the highly regarded Berkeley #1 duo.  Down 2-5 in the first set, the Lady Dragons put their foot down and started the climb back to victory.  Supreme steadiness and blunting Berkeley’s power led to renewed confidence and smooth sailing in the second set to close it out.  Madison & Kate have been stepping it up all year against tough rivals, gaining experience in every match win or lose!

O’Dowd 7, Mt. Eden 0 RECORD: 3-1 WACC, 7-3 OVERALL

SUMMARY: O’Dowd cruised to victory against their Shoreline opponent, a numbers-challenged Mt. Eden squad.  Sadly some of the Shoreline teams have not reloaded their tennis teams from last season and suffered a numbers drop.  Their #1 and #2 singles players returned to give #1 Sarah and #2 Alexis a bit of a challenge.  In Doubles #1 Milan / Maddie and #2 Samantha / Emily cruised to victory losing only one game total.

MATCH MVP: ALEXIS GILLIKIN – As a 3rd Year Junior, Alexis is starting to come into her own in singles and doubles.  She stepped up to play #2 singles and knocked out a 6-2, 6-4 victory.  Alexis will no doubt be an important part of O’Dowd’s chase for the NCS Playoffs this year.

Castro Valley 5, O’Dowd 2

RECORD: 2-1 WACC, 6-3 OVERALL

SUMMARY: With O’Dowd’s #1 and #2 graduating – we will have a few matches where our opponents DID NOT lose their top players.  This makes for tough matchups with our younger #1 Milan and #2 Evian.  Great experience for them, but consequently the Lady Dragons need to win down the line for a chance to win the team match.  Along with Sarah at #3 Singles, #1 Doubles (Madison & Kate) came through with a big 6-3, 6-3 win.  Ultimately we could not pull out the other matches and CV snuck away with a 5-2 win.

MATCH MVP: SARAH CRANEY – In a tough day of matchups for O’Dowd – Sarah took care of business at #3 Singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win.  Sarah has continued to provide steady leadership to the younger players as Captain and lead the charge on-court as well with a 6-2 record.

O’Dowd 7, Encinal 0

RECORD: 2-0 WACC, 6-2 OVERALL

SUMMMARY: O’Dowd pared down Varsity to play our Shoreline opponent, leaving the top few players at home to play challenge matches.  Encinal has made tons of progress, which they displayed in today’s match.  O’Dowd played just right – skilled enough to overcome any challenge and remain in control of the match from start to finish without losing a set.

MATCH MVP: ALEXIS GILLIKIN – 3rd Year Player Alexis has come into her own, steadily rising up the ladder to #4. Alexis played #2 singles vs Encinal coming away with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory.  Her hard-hitting steady gamecarried her past her opponent – outlasting rally after rally and creating winners at will.  Alexis is 6-2 so far in 2016.

O’Dowd Frosh made their mark in Division 7 – Friday started off with two tough tiebreak losses, followed by their breakthrough win vs Hoover High.  Going into Saturday the Frosh caught fire and won both matches for the D7 Bracket win and Championship shirts.  Annika Ditzler, Jenny Cheng, Grace Daum and Grace Gao held down the singles spots respectably against older, more seasoned opponents.  Cheng at #2 Singles was the ONLY O’Dowd player to go undefeated at 5-0.  Sophia Childs and Bella Friedrich held down #1 doubles with a 2-2 record against far more experienced players.  The Frosh team showed great team spirit and have become a very tight-knit unit which will undoubtedly become the future of O’Dowd Tennis.

9/6/16

O’Dowd 7, San Lorenzo 0

RECORD: WACC 1-0, OVERALL 2-0

SUMMARY: Women’s Tennis won their WACC opener in style with a 7-0 Varsity and 5-0 JV victories.  Varsity saw some close singles matches including #2 Alexis and #4 Julia pulling out 3-set tiebreak victories.  Doubles was more routine with all straight set wins.  JV continued the trend, winning all pro-sets in a convincing manner.  Next up:  Fresno CA Classic Tournament!

MATCH MVP:  AERIELLE BRACKETT.  Aerielle moved up from JV to Varsity and had quite the debut – with a 6-2, 7-6 win at #3 singles.  Playing incredible defense, Aerielle covered the entire court and made very few unforced errors to wear down her opponent en route to victory.
