Speech and Debate Continues to Excel


Congratulations are in order for O’Dowd Speech and Debate Team members who participated in two tournaments over the weekend.

On October 7, 19 schools gathered on the Bishop O’Dowd High School campus for a Parliamentary tournament sponsored by Club Parli. Claudia Hester and Alden O’Rafferty were Co-Champions in the Varsity Debate division, while Michael Jayasuriya and Shawn Schulz placed 5th, missing the cut to semi-finals on speaker points. Claudia Hester was the top speaker in the Varsity division. The newest debaters in the Junior Varsity division, Lucy Barretto and Lola Deibert also placed 5th missing the cut to the semi-finals on speaker points; Paulina Harding and Gratia O’Rafferty attained a winning record after five preliminary rounds. McKenzie Taffe was the top speaker in Junior Varsity division.

On October 8, the Public Forum debaters headed to Santa Rosa High School for a Golden Gate Speech Association (GGSA) League tournament. Four of the seven teams accrued winning records (Anna Mette/Evian Jiang; Owen Burlingham/Grayson Broderick; Sydney Ferris/Edward Keenan). Sanah Basrai and Natalie Peter were undefeated after three rounds in the Varsity division.

The next tournament for the O’Dowd debaters will be at the University of the Pacific, October 27-29.
