Originally from Portland, Oregon, Matt attended college and began his teaching career in Los Angeles before moving to Oakland in 2014. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Sociology and African American Studies from the University of Southern California and his Master’s in Education from Pepperdine University. He became a teacher because he believes deeply in the power of young people to change the world for the better. His student-centered approach is grounded in strong relationships and project-based learning. He values O’Dowd as a place where students are empowered to discover who they are and pursue their passions. Outside of school, he is passionate about his family, coaching basketball, and hip-hop music.
