Alex Murphy ’18, a member of the San Francisco Bay Area Council Troop 305, last fall earned the rank of Eagle Scout – the Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank. For his Eagle project, Alex and a group of volunteers removed old temporary fencing and constructed 150 feet of split rail fencing along a steep section of the Bridgeview trail in Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland.
The purpose of the project was to prevent erosion along an existing trail and to protect the redwood sorrel, a native plant that grows in the shade at the foot of redwood stands. Alex raised money for the project supplies, designed the fencing, coordinated with the City of Oakland, the East Bay Regional Park District and the Friends of Sausal Creek, and directed the installation of the fencing in the summer of 2017. An Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Alex will be held in May.
