Why I Teach:
Because it's the most effective and most enjoyable way to change the world.
Most powerful teaching technique:
Clear goals and intellectual challenge - setting high standards for students. Students need clear goals and should know up front what they will learn and what they will be expected to do with what they know.
Why are the subjects you teach important?:
I teach Computer Science because it is an integral part of our lives, shaping virtually everything from the objects around us to the ways in which we communicate, travel, work, and play. And this is just the beginning - Computer Science is now a key enabler for discovery and innovation in most other fields of study, making it an incredibly relevant course of study.
Favorite quotes:
"I never teach my pupils, I only attempt to provide conditions in which they can learn." - Albert Einstein
Favorite trivia:
Ben & Jerry learned how to make ice cream by taking a $5 correspondence course offered by Penn State (They decided to split one course).
Recommended visual media:
The Razor's Edge with Tyrone Power, NOT Bill Murray
Recommended reads:
"The Boy Behind the Gate" by Larry Jacobson
Hobbies or outside interests:
Travel, tennis, cycling, and hiking with my dogs.
