Important Information For Online Classes

Online courses offer your child the flexibility to take a summer class while participating in other summer activities. However, these advancement classes are not self-paced nor are they correspondence courses. Our students are important members of a learning community. Students will need to access the course at least three times a week, participate actively in discussion boards, and collaborate online for group projects. Regular participation and timely submission of assignments according to set due dates are critical components of online courses.

Students will need:

  • Reliable internet access to be able to log in to the course at least two to four times a week to submit assignments and participate in discussions.
  • A reliable computer.
  • A reliable video recording device capable of recording 3-5 minutes of video with sound that can save files to then be uploaded to YouTube. YouTube supports the following file formats: MOV, MPEG4, AVI, WMV, or FLV.
  • It is not recommended students take this course if they will be traveling and away from wifi for more than 7 days total in the summer
  • Not recommended for students traveling overseas this summer
  • Note that this class moves at an accelerated pace; assignments are due every week day.
  • Students should plan to spend seven hours per week on work for this class.
  • At least 1-3 hours per day to work on assignments.
  • To attend two required in-person meetings: student orientation meeting on June 5 so that all students learn how to perform the tasks required for the class. The final exam date will be communicated by the teacher at the start of the course, for a traditional final exam taken without the use of information technology. Parents are welcome to attend the student orientation meeting.

All classes offered in this program receive full academic credit for Bishop O'Dowd High School students. Many are U.C. eligible classes. Students from other schools should check with their counselors or Academic Assistant Principals to see if O'Dowd courses will be accepted for academic credit purposes.
