Whether your student is new to a sport or just wants to work on their skills, you'll find that our Summer Sports Camps will support incoming sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth grade boys and girls. We offer basketball, baseball, softball, cross country and track & field. Our camps are focused on skill development. Incoming ninth graders should note the dates as they differ from the High School Program dates. Take a look at the fun and motivating sport specific camps that our talented and experienced coaching staff have created.

Boys Basketball Camp

Dates: June 11 - June 14     9 a.m - 2 p.m.     K-9th       Cost: $200
July 2 - July 5 (no class July 4th)     9 a.m. - 2 p.m.     K-9th      Cost: $150

Join O’Dowd Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach Lou Richie and staff for a four day camp. The camp will focus on individual basketball fundamentals as well as team concepts that have made Bishop O’Dowd High School a perennial league, North Coast Section, and state playoff contender. This camp is designed for boys interested in participating in youth and high school basketball. Sessions will include: ball-handling, footwork fundamentals, transition drills, offensive and defensive team concepts, and competitive play. Participants are encouraged to wear athletic clothes and basketball shoes, bring a lunch and a water bottle.

Baseball/Softball (Boys and Girls, All levels - incoming 6th-9th)

Want to learn from a former pro? Join us over the summer to learn the fundamentals of the game! Jase Turner will lead O'Dowd's summer academy baseball/softball camp, a two-week camp that will address these skills: hitting mechanics, infield and outfield fielding fundamentals, specific defensive position instruction and base running technique instruction. This baseball/softball camp is designed for those student-athletes interested in participating in youth, travel and/or high school baseball, or those looking to learn the basics and have some fun!

No experience is needed to participate. Participants are encouraged to wear athletic clothes and baseball/softball cleats, bring a bat (if you have one), glove, hat, sunscreen and a water bottle.

Boys Basketball - Beginner (incoming 6th-9th)

These dates are specific to the Middle School Program and differ from the High School Prep dates.

This class is for student-athletes who are either interested in learning more about the game of basketball or have recently been introduced to basketball and are looking to improve on their basic skill-set. This class features a strong and targeted emphasis on building a solid foundation of basketball fundamentals through a variety of learning activities. Over the course of the class, players will be introduced to new individual and team drills which encompass the five target areas of: footwork, dribbling, passing, ball handling, and shooting. The drills and activities in this class are progressively taught and reviewed over the duration of the class. Additionally, there will be focus on basketball health and conditioning, sportsmanship and teamwork, and having fun.

Student-athletes are encouraged to wear athletic clothes and shoes.

Boys Basketball - Advanced (incoming 6th-9th)

These dates are specific to the Middle School Program and differ from the High School Prep dates.
Session 1: 12:30 - 1:50 p.m. & 3:30 - 4:30 p.m., June 18 - June 29
Session 2: 12:30 - 1:50 p.m. & 3:30 - 4:30 p.m., July 9 - July 20

This class is designed for student-athletes who are already playing basketball competitively and have a solid foundation of beginning basketball skills. This class will continue to cover the necessary fundamental basketball skills of footwork, dribbling, passing, ball handling, and shooting. However, a higher emphasis will be placed on learning how to perform the skills correctly and implementing them in game-like situations. Additionally, the skills taught will be framed within the context of game application. The pace of learning the necessary drills and skills within this class will be faster as progression will move at a higher pace. Drills will be more competitive in both an individual and collaborative setting. As always, there will be a strong focus on basketball health and conditioning, sportsmanship and teamwork, and having fun.

Student-athletes are encouraged to wear athletic clothes and shoes.

Girls Basketball - All levels (incoming 6th-9th)

Sessions will include: ball-handling, passing, footwork fundamentals, and shooting fundamentals, transition drills, offensive and defensive team concepts, competitive play.

Student-athletes are encouraged to wear athletic clothes and shoes.

Cross Country/Track & Field (incoming 6th-9th)

Join O'Dowd Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Jamal Cooks and his staff for a five-week summer speed and endurance running camp. Coach Cooks has successfully led many aspiring track and field and cross country athletes throughout the Bay Area to successful performance. The goals of this camp are to develop a solid fundamental fitness base and a positive self-image through the development of friendships and interaction with positive adult role models. This camp will introduce, train, and teach the fundamentals of sprint and distance running. Each camp session will include: sprint mechanics, the fundamentals of distance running mechanics, plyometric training, agility and flexibility development in addition to building aerobic endurance. No experience is needed to participate in this camp. Student-athletes are encouraged to wear athletic clothes and shoes.

Football (All levels - incoming 6th-9th)

Join O'Dowd's freshman football coaches for football. This is a mixed level class that will focus on learning proper warm up drills and technique, as well as practice ladder and bag drills. There will also be an introduction to the tackling component, however, this class will be "touch only" and no actual tackling will take place. Student-athletes will apply their learned skills in seven on seven scrimmage play. This class will place an emphasis on the basics and learning the game of football while having fun. No experience is necessary. Participants are encouraged to wear football or baseball cleats and athletic clothes.

Boys Soccer (All levels - incoming 6th-9th)

These dates are specific to the Middle School Program and differ from the High School Prep dates.
Session 1: 12:30 - 1:50 p.m., June 18 - June 29

Players will learn the technical and tactical skills to being a soccer player. They will learn the ability to be comfortable and confident on the ball in a one versus one situation. We will teach the players how to make the right decision under pressure. The following skills will be incorporated :

-Dribbling with laces both with left and right foot
-Ball manipulation with the inside and outside of both left and right foot
-Juggling
-Change of pace/direction with ball
-Properly receiving the ball
-Bringing the ball under control with a quality first touch
-Passing short and long distance with pace and accuracy with both left and right foot
-Proper technique on how to head the ball to prevent injury
-Proper striking technique (with both feet) with laces and placement shots
-Goalkeeping is incorporated into every session

Student-athletes are encouraged to wear athletic clothes and soccer cleats.

Girls Soccer (All levels - incoming 6th-9th)

This is a mixed level class for first-time players of the sport or for girls with a background in soccer that want to develop further skills. Students will practice ball handling, passing, and shooting. The class will focus on technical and tactical skills as well as conditioning.

Strength and Conditioning (incoming 6th-8th)

This program is designed to provide the middle school students (incoming sixth -eighth grade) with a solid foundation for developing strength, speed, and power. Enrollment is limited in order to maximize class instruction. Student-athletes are encouraged to wear athletic clothes and shoes.

-20 Consecutive Pushups, 10 Consecutive Pullups, 50 Consecutive Sit Ups
-Deadlift 1.5x Body Weight, Back Squat Body Weight, Overhead Press .5x BW

Student-athletes are encouraged to wear athletic clothes and shoes.

Volleyball (Grades 3-7)

Free BART Shuttle

A free O'Dowd to San Leandro BART shuttle will be offered in the morning, midday, and afternoon.




Cancellation Policy

If, prior to the start of class/camp, you choose not to attend for any reason you will be issued a refund of your fees less a $25 processing fee up until two weeks before program start. After that time, no refunds will be given.
